MiCo’s Mercantile: Price-Matching Amazon, Strengthening the Community

Miguel Comeau, owner of Mico’s Mercantile, is putting out a challenge to all local retailers. After hearing the news of thousands of layoffs at the Hudson’s Bay Company, Miguel realized that if we don’t support each other, there won’t be anything left open.

“If somebody sees something that they’ve found cheaper on Amazon, I will match the price,” says Miguel, and he’ll even go one percent better than Amazon.

“I think it would help all of us, honestly, because I sell things that other people don’t sell and vice versa. So, between everybody in town, we pretty much have everything that you could find on Amazon.”

Mico’s Mercantile is located at 197 Main Street and boasts an impressive variety of products.

Starting as a Christmas pop-up shop nine years ago, over the last five years, Mico’s Mercantile has expanded into a full-scale retailer.

Miguel says that his bread and butter is puzzles, but he sells all kinds of different products, like board games, jewelry, diamond art, paint-by-numbers kits, as well as yarn and craft supplies. He also carries a local selection of different items, like soap, artwork, candles, cards, and more.

He even recently began carrying lightly worn dresses for proms and special occasions.

“A lot of these dresses are worn once for a couple of hours and then put in a closet,” says Miguel. So, he now has a selection of dresses that are clean and look as good as new.

It’s great to see someone with such a huge passion for retail get to live out his dream. Miguel has always wanted to own a store, and even as a child, he ran a pretend store in his garage called Mico’s.

He also spent many years in the retail and customer service industries before finally opening up his store on Main Street.

“My first job was at Zellers, and then I worked at Le Château for thirteen years,” says Miguel. These positions started in Bathurst, but Miguel took a transfer to Vancouver with the Le Château and spent many years out west, working there in construction and as a flight attendant.

As a flight attendant, Miguel’s schedule was flexible enough for him to return home for the holidays and open the pop-up shop. Then, once COVID hit, Miguel decided it was time to come back home, and so, for the past five years, he’s been running Mico’s full-time.

Mico’s Mercantile is a beautiful shop. Let’s support each other and continue to buy locally. As mentioned, Miguel will match Amazon pricing for the same products that he carries if he’s selling them at a higher price than Amazon. He’s urging everyone who can to do the same.
