A Love For Painting, Companionship, And Cleaning

How a young entrepreneur is turning her passions into side businesses

Kanisha Gray has always had a passion for art. She started with drawings and sketches that developed into a love for painting as she reached her teenage years.

“It’s calming. It’s a place to escape, and I get lost in it,” says Kanisha.

What started out as strictly a hobby has turned into a small business where you can purchase some paintings that she has already completed, or contact her if you’re looking for something custom made.

She prides herself on offering paintings that are always unique to the person buying them.

“Even if it’s similar to another painting that I’ve done, each one is still going to be a little different.”

It started with her grandmother seeing the paintings that were hung up around Kanisha’s house and telling her she had talent and that she should look at selling some. Her grandmother was her first purchase and from there she’s received a few orders, including some that are featured at the Bel Air Residence in Beresford.

“It makes you so proud when someone buys your work and puts it up in their home. The fact that they want to show off something that you’ve done is amazing.”

You can visit her page here and Kanisha is always interested in speaking with people about art and creating something that’s one of a kind.

“I have a small following on Facebook, but I’m not getting a lot of traction. I’d like more engagement, and to have more people asking questions,” says Kanisha.

Kanisha has thought about trying different avenues to promote her work like getting a table at the Farmer’s Market, or possibly teaching a class, and though she hasn’t done it yet, it’s still something that could be possible in the future.

But for now, the goal is to get some more visibility for her page. If she can create some more engagement, which leads to some more custom orders, then perhaps taking those next steps will feel like a more viable option.

On top of her work as Personal Support Worker, and her side art business, Kanisha has also started a cleaning business.

“I’m a PSW, and my favourite aspects of the job are the companionship and the cleaning.”

She’ll be offering surface cleaning, as well as deep cleaning. The essentials like mopping, vacuuming, and bathroom cleaning will all be offered, as well as other options which can be discussed by contacting Kanisha through her personal Facebook page.

We want to thank Kanisha for being a part of this week’s edition of The Northern Heat Report. We wish her success in her business ventures, and if you’re looking for one of a kind personalized paintings, or some help with cleaning, be sure to reach out to Kanisha. She’d love to hear from you.
