WHAT IS THERMALLY MODIFIED WOOD?

In this episode I have the CEO of Thermalwood Canada, Bob Lennon on to talk about thermally modified wood. Thermalwood Canada is a member of the Thermowood Association and follows their procedures for modification so you can expect consistent quality throughout their kiln runs.  In short thermally modified wood has been through a process identical to typical kiln drying but with an added step in the middle that raises the temperature substantially higher.  During this phase the wood is changed at the molecular level making it stable, rot resistant, and highly water resistant.

But beyond just the typical thermally modified hardwoods, Bob and his crew have been experimenting and creating new products to fill holes in other markets. In particular is their Obsidian product which may just replace Ebony entirely in guitar manufacturing.  This process is still evolving and we can expect to see maybe other colors showing up in the future maybe?  Needless to say, Bob’s “Ebony Janitor” title may need to be expanded in the future.

I want to say a big thank you to Bob Lennon for taking time to speak with me.  I really enjoyed the conversation and his passion for trying new things and filling holes in the marketplace with new products that can decrease waste factor in so many species.

Go see their virtual factory tour and buy some wood…before the tariffs make it more expensive.
